SCHOLARSHIPS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT

In India, the access to education is not available equally to all and is determined by various social and financial factors. With the goal of making education accessible to all irrespective of their caste, class, gender, ability, or creed, the Government of India offers several scholarship schemes for the nation’s students. Here are some scholarship schemes you should know about:

  1. Pre-Matric Scholarship for Students with Disabilities This scholarship aims to support disabled students of Grade 9 and 10 in order to ensure their studies and prepare them to earn their livelihood and find a dignified place for themselves in society as well as minimize the drop-out rates of disabled students in transition from elementary to secondary stage. To avail the scholarship, the applicant must be a regular full-time student of Grade 9 or 10 in a government or recognized school, with 40% disability or more along with valid certificate, and with annual family income of less than INR 2.50 lakh. The selected scholars receive maintenance allowance for a year, book grant, and disability allowance according to the type of disability. The tentative application period is between August to November.

  2. Pre Matric Scholarships Scheme for Minorities This scholarship aims to support students from Grade 1 to 10 of minority communities. To avail the scholarship, the applicant must be a regular full-time student studying in Grade 1 to 10, secured at least 50% marks in previous final examination, with family income of not more than INR 1 lakh, and belonging to Muslim, Sikh, Christian, Buddhist, Jain, or Parsi/Zoroastrian community. The selected scholars receive assistance with admission fee, tuition fee, and maintenance allowance. The tentative application period is between August to November.

  3. National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) This is organized by National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) and aims to identify and nurture talented students by financially supporting them in their education. The exam is conducted at two levels, state (conducted by respective state-government) and national (conducted by NCERT). To avail the benefits of this exam, the candidate must be a student of Grade 10 at a recognized school. It offers 1000 scholarships and the candidates who qualify both the rounds receive financial assistance to pursue courses in the stream of science and social science (up to doctoral-level students) and professional courses such as engineering and medicine (up to second-degree level). The tentative application period is between August to September.

  4. Swanath Scholarship Scheme This scholarship is offered by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and aims to provide financial assistance and encouragement to orphans, wards of parents who died due to COVID-19, and wards of Armed Forces and Central Paramilitary Forces who martyred in action to pursue education. To avail the scholarship, the applicant must either be an orphan, lost either or both parents due to COVID-19, or ward of Armed Forces and Central Paramilitary Forces martyred in action, with annual family income not more than INR 8 lakhs, a student studying at AICTE approved institutions, and must not be a recipient of any other government or AICTE sponsored scholarships. It offers a scholarship amount of INR 50000 per year to pay college fees, and purchase computer, books, and other equipments essential to the course. The tentative application period is between December to January.

  5. Merit Scholarship for Single Girl Child This scholarship is offered by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and aims to support the education of meritorious single girl students who have passed Class 10 examination. To avail the scholarship, the applicant must be a single girl child and the only child or their parents, should have passed CBSE Class X examination with 60% or more marks, are planning to study further in a CBSE affiliated school, and the tuition fee of the school should not be more than INR 1500 per month. The scholarship offers financial assistance of INR 500 per month for the candidate’s study in Grade 11 and 12. The tentative application period is between September to October.

  6. Central Sector Scholarship Scheme (CSSS) This is a scheme initiated by the Department of Higher Education of MHRD to help financially assist college and university students from economically underprivileged families. To avail the scholarship, the applicant must be above the 80th percentile of successful students who have passed Class 12, must be pursuing a regular undergraduate or postgraduate course, and should have an annual family income of less than INR 8 lakh. The scholarship is given out to a total of 82,000 graduate/postgraduate students every year. The selected students receive an annual scholarship amount of INR 20000 so that they are able to meet their day-to-day expenses while pursuing higher studies. The tentative application period is between August to November.

  7. Top Class Education Scheme for SC Students This scheme is aimed to promote quality education beyond Class 12 amongst students belonging to Scheduled Castes, by providing full financial support. To avail the benefits of this scheme, the applicant must belong to a scheduled caste, must have completed Class 12, must be enrolled in a full-time course in a notified institution through general selection criteria prescribed by respective institutions, and must have annual family income not more than INR 8 lakh. The scholarship covers full-tuition fee, living expenses, books and stationary, and a one time assistance of computer/laptop with UPS and printer of any reputed brand. The tentative application period is between March to April.

  8. INSPIRE Scholarship Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) Scholarship is aimed to promote among the youth of the country the excitement of creative pursuit of science and attract talent to the field of science at an early age. To avail the benefits of this scholarship, the student must be among the top 1% in Class 12th examinations and must be pursuing courses in Natural Sciences at the B.Sc. or Integrated M.Sc. level. The scholarship offers a total of 10000 scholarships each year valued at INR 80000 per annum. The tentative application period is between November and December.
